The General Manager and the Golden Lab: Bruce Brainerd's Origin Story of The Howdy Way at Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel
A hotel lobby is the heartbeat of any great resort. It's where first impressions form, where strangers become guests, and where trust is either forged or lost in a glance. I learned early that people do not check into a place because of the thread count on the sheets or the shine on the marble floors. They come because they trust the promise of care, the quiet assurance that someone will serve them first. That lobby became my classroom, teaching me the foundations of hospitality leadership long before I put names to the principles.
This is the origin of the Go With Howdy way, my Bruce Brainerd founder story. It starts in the lobbies of Hyatts across the country and finds its turning point with a wagging tail at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel. It's a tale of building trust, one paw print at a time.
Charting the Course: My Journey Through Hospitality Leadership
My career kicked off at the Hyatt Regency DFW. I was fresh-faced, eager, and ready to dive into the rhythm of a world-class hotel. That first year immersed me in every corner—from the front desk buzz to the back-of-house grind. I saw how small acts built loyalty, how a genuine smile in the lobby could turn a one-night stay into a lifelong connection. It was raw, real, and set the stage for everything to come.
From there, I moved to the Hyatt Regency Austin as Director of Finance, where I spent the next 5.5 years sharpening my skills. Austin's vibrant energy matched the hotel's spirit. I managed budgets, forecasted revenues, but more importantly, I learned that numbers tell only half the story. The other half lives in the people—the staff who show up daily, the guests who return because their needs came first. Serving first wasn't a slogan; it was survival.
Chicago called next, pulling me into the corporate world at Hyatt Hotels and Resorts. The Windy City sharpened my strategic edge. I collaborated on portfolios that spanned continents, analyzed market shifts, and honed the discipline required for large-scale operations. Yet, even amid spreadsheets and boardrooms, I missed the pulse of the property. The lobby's lessons echoed: trust is earned on the ground, where actions match words.
California brought me home. First as General Manager of The Newporter, then the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. Those roles reignited my passion for on-site leadership. Newport Beach, with its ocean views and bustling conferences, demanded precision and warmth in equal measure. I built teams that anticipated needs, turning transactions into relationships. Guests remembered us not for the amenities, but for the trust we instilled.
Then came La Jolla, another GM stint at the Hyatt Regency. The coastal charm there tested my ability to blend luxury with approachability. I oversaw renovations, staff training, and guest experiences that prioritized genuine connections. Each property added layers to my philosophy: go with those you trust, because relationships over transactions create enduring success.
Reimagining Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel: A New Chapter Begins
Recruiters approached me with an opportunity that felt like destiny: General Manager at The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel. This wasn't just a job; it was a chance to reimagine a storied resort perched on California's cliffs, overlooking the Pacific. For 13 years, I stood at the helm, guiding it to become the most successful in its 35-plus-year history. Revenue soared, guest satisfaction peaked, and awards piled up—not by accident, but by design.
We renovated suites to feel like sanctuaries, curated events that lingered in memories, and trained our team to embody serving first. The lobby transformed into a trust-building hub, where every interaction whispered reliability. Staff knew names, remembered preferences, and acted with intention. This was hospitality leadership at its core: building trust through consistent, heartfelt service.
But success begged for more. We needed a spark, something to elevate us beyond excellence into something transformative. That's when Brock entered our world.
Meeting Brock: The Golden Labrador Who Rewrote Our Rules
Picture this: an 8-week-old Golden Labrador puppy, all floppy ears and boundless curiosity, padding into the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel lobby. That was Brock, courtesy of Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). This remarkable organization trains service dogs for people with disabilities and veterans, pairing them with life-changing companions. We partnered with CCI to raise a puppy, and Brock became ours.
From day one, Brock came to work. Every single day. He was a fixture in the lobby, greeting guests with a gentle nudge and a soulful gaze. He'd trot through back offices, attend executive meetings, and even join major events—weddings, galas, you name it. Staff would toss him a toy during breaks; guests slipped him treats when they thought I wasn't looking. He fit seamlessly, a four-legged ambassador of warmth.
Brock's presence sparked a daily ritual that reshaped our philosophy. Mornings began with his enthusiastic greetings, setting a tone of pure, unfiltered joy. He'd weave between legs in the lobby, pausing to lean against a weary traveler or nuzzle a child's hand. No agenda, no sales pitch—just presence. Watching him, I realized this was the essence of the Go With Howdy origin: actions match their words, every time.
Guests opened up around Brock. Conversations flowed deeper. A business executive shared stories of his own dog; a family on vacation let their kids play fetch during check-in. Brock built trust instantly, modeling relationships over transactions. He didn't ask for loyalty; he earned it with every wag. Our team absorbed this. Service became more intuitive, more human. Staff lingered longer at the desk, listened harder, served first without hesitation.
From Puppy to Purpose: Deepening Our CCI Commitment
What started as raising one puppy evolved into a profound commitment to CCI's Canine Companions Veteran Initiative. Brock's charm opened doors. We hosted puppy raiser trainings in our ballrooms, shared his story on social media, and rallied our network. Guests met Brock and heard about CCI's mission—service dogs restoring independence to veterans. Donations poured in.
Over time, our efforts raised over $1.8 million for the Veteran Initiative. Events featured CCI speakers; auctions spotlighted service dog memorabilia. Brock attended them all, his golden fur a beacon of hope. This wasn't charity for charity's sake. It was serving first on a grand scale, building trust with our community, and proving that when actions match words, extraordinary things happen.
Brock eventually graduated to his forever role, but his legacy endures. He taught us to go with those you trust—partners like CCI whose missions align with ours. The Howdy Way crystallized here: at the intersection of a cliffside resort, a golden labrador named Brock, and a team committed to relationships over transactions.
Reflecting now, I see Brock's paw prints everywhere in our success. He embodied serving first, building trust effortlessly. In the world of entrepreneurship and business ownership, especially hospitality leadership, this is the gold standard. Prioritize people, let relationships guide decisions, and watch your world expand.
